Ever wonder why summer reading is a thing? Or why we feel compelled to read more in the summer? Or even why we seem drawn to the “Best Summer Reads” lists? Well, it’s pretty simple really.
First of all, schools encourage and even hold challenges for kids to read as much as they can over the summer and in doing so, adults seem to jump on the bandwagon and increase the number of books they read over the summer as well.
Secondly, many libraries now offer adult reading clubs over the summer. And with some great incentive prizes such as coffee mugs, gift cards or gas and grocery cards! (I know I would read for a chance for any of those!!)
Third, oddly enough, most adults (mainly women) have 3 reads in the summer: a summer read, a beach read and an escape read. The summer read is the book you pick up and read when you have free moments. The beach read speaks for itself, but it is usually an adventure story, a hero saves the heroine. And the escape read is the book you take on vacation and is usually romance.
Summer adds extra hours of sunlight which makes us feel happier and more active. We tend to get more things done earlier in the day, leaving us with a bit more free time. Evenings are pleasant to sit outside and enjoy a few chapters of a good book. There just seems to be extra free time. Enough to pick up that book that has been sitting on your nightstand or on your bookshelf.
I know this blog is short this week. I’m off to read a book.
Until next time…
